Two Months Before:

Make a schedule and book any necessary travel arrangements such as flights, hotels, or rental cars.
Create a file for the move to keep track of contacts, receipts, and estimates (keep receipts for tax purposes).
One Month Before:
Contact the utility companies at both your new home and current home to set up/cancel service.
Begin packing non-essential items and items that will go to storage if necessary.
Arrange for school, medical, dental, and veterinary records to be transferred.
Contact your insurance agent to find out about coverage during the move and any changes to the policy.
Notify US Postal Service, publications, creditors, credit cards, and banks of your change of address.
One Week Before:
Continue packing and place items you intend to move yourself in a separate area to avoid confusion.
Pack a suitcase with clothing, toiletries, medications, and personal items for the first night in your new home.
Set aside a box for essential items like toilet paper, trash bags, and bed sheets that will be needed immediately after moving in.
Confirm with moving company your moving schedule, new house address, and delivery date.
Read and sign the bill of lading from your mover and add to your moving file.
Do a final walk through at your house to shut off lights and make sure nothing is left then lock the doors.
Pay movers based on your previous arrangements and provide cash for tip.
Check your possessions as they are brought into your new home and make note of any damage.
